The Institute for Balkan Studies has the pleasure to announce that Yale University has officially recognized the International Summer School for Greek Language, History and Culture, thus enabling participants to receive credits. For more information, see Yale University’s webpage.

The Summer School for Greek Language, History and Culture takes place in August in Thessaloniki and offers an intensive program directed by Prof. Dr. Dr. phil. K. A. Dimadis. Participants (foreign students, researchers in Modern Greek and related subjects, teachers and diplomats) have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of Greek society and immerse themselves for a month in the language and cultural traditions. In recognition of the goals and achievements of the Program, throughout the years the Ministry of Culture and Sports has very generously and successfully supported the Summer School for Greek Language, History and Culture, offering significant numbers of scholarships to foreign students each year.

Fees and application deadline

The deadline for submitting applications to participate in the 2023 Programme is 30 April 2023.

The total cost of participation in the International Summer School is € 2,000. This covers all expenses: hotel accommodation, full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner), tuition, excursions and guided tours. As soon as a student is informed that he/she has been accepted, the total cost of participation in the International Summer School of  € 2,000 should be paid by 23 June 2023 in the student’s name to the Balkan Research and Studies Society’s account with the National Bank of Greece:

Fees cannot be refunded. However, if a student is unable to attend the programme for serious reasons, he/she should notify the Secretary of the International Summer School prior to the commencement of classes and credit will be allowed for the following year.

 


Travel information

There are direct flights to Thessaloniki from many European cities (Berlin, London, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Zurich, Munich, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, etc.) as well as good train and bus connections. There are banks and tourist information offices at Macedonia Airport and at Thessaloniki central railway station. The Grand Hotel Palace is situated in the western part of Thessaloniki, at about 22 km (15.5 mi) from Macedonia Airport and about 3 km (1.87 mi) from the railway station.

·Α1) From Macedonia Airport to bus station Κ.Τ.Ε.Λ. (last stop).

Take bus 01X from Macedonia Airport (from 06:10 to 22:40) to bus station Κ.Τ.Ε.Λ. (= last stop) and get off at bus stop "Ομοσπονδία" ("Omospondia"). The Hotel is located on the opposite side of the road, approximately 80 metres/85 yards before the bus stop. The ticket price for the 01X is €1,80 per person. You can buy it from the ticket office that is located next to the bus station at the airport or from the automatic ticket machine in the bus. Be aware that the machine does not give change.

·Α2) For those arriving at Macedonia Airport after 22:00.

Take bus 01N (night bus) from Macedonia Airport (from 23:10 to 05:55) to bus station Κ.Τ.Ε.Λ. (= last stop) and get off at bus stop "Ομοσπονδία" ("Omospondia"). The Hotel is located on the opposite side of the road, approximately 80 metres/85 yards before the bus stop. The ticket price for the 01N is €1,80 per person. You can buy it from the automatic ticket machine in the bus. Be aware that the machine does not give change.

·B1) From bus station Κ.Τ.Ε.Λ. to Grand Hotel Palace.

You have three options:

1) Walk to the Grand Hotel Palace: Monastiriou St. 350 (the distance is about 370 metres/400 yards). However, we do not recommend this if you arrive late at night.

2) Take bus 02Κ and get off at bus stop "Ορυζόμυλοι" ("Orizomiloi"). The Hotel is located to the right, approximately 40 metres/43 yards before the bus stop. The ticket price for buses 02Κ is €0,90 per person.

3) Take a taxi, which costs about €7 (night fare).

·A taxi from the Airport to the Grand Hotel Palace costs about €35,00.

After midnight the cost of hiring a taxi increases by about €35,00 + €7,00 (night fare).

·C) Students arriving by train can take bus No 02K or No 19 in the direction of the interurban bus station (Κ.Τ.Ε.Λ.) and get off at bus stop "Ομοσπονδία" ("Omospondia"). The Hotel is located on the opposite side of the road, approximately 80 metres/85 yards before the bus stop.

The bus ticket costs €0,90 per person.

A taxi from the railway station to the Grand Hotel Palace costs about €8,00.
